How to Avoid Furnace Repairs
A broken furnace is never fun, but it’s particularly problematic in the winter months. While you may not be able to avoid all furnace issues, particularly if your furnace is more than 10 years old, following these three tips may keep furnace breakdowns to a minimum.
1. Change the Filter
A clogged air filter will force your furnace to work harder, and that means you’ll be using unnecessary amounts of energy. This could shave years off the functional life of your furnace. It will also increase your utility bills. Moreover, when an air filter is dirty, you run the risk that dirt and debris will build up inside your heating system. This could also lead to system failure. That’s why it’s important to change your air filter regularly and avoid repair.
2. Learn to Use Your Thermostat Properly
What’s the first thing you should do if your furnace won’t turn on? Check the batteries in your digital thermostat. Your thermostat batteries power a low-voltage relay circuit that sends a signal to your furnace when it’s time to switch on automatically. If there isn’t enough battery juice to power that circuit, your furnace won’t go on. Changing your thermostat batteries will correct this issue.
“On” and “auto” are two other thermostat settings that can make you believe your furnace needs repairs when it doesn’t. These setting refer to the fans rather than the furnace. When the thermostat is set to “on,” the fan is always running, even when the furnace isn’t heating. When the thermostat is set to “auto,” the fan will only power on when the furnace powers on.
3. Keep Up With Routine Maintenance Services
Routine furnace maintenance allows technicians to catch small issues before they get the chance to turn into big problems. Regular furnace maintenance can help prolong the operational life of your heating system and keep your heating bills manageable.
